Merzouga Sahara Desert Trek 5 Days
The Dunes of Merzouga, 20 kilometers long and 5 kilometers wide, are the largest in Morocco. Some of them exceed 100 meters in height and their orange colored sand comes from the Sahara. Around the dunes is a green palm grove, a unique and impressive oasis that stands out among this intense orange.
During the rainy season, from February to March, lagoons are formed, such as that of Daya Tamda, where birds abound, mainly the exotic flamingo. For this reason, Merzouga is also a tourist spot for wildlife lovers since, in addition to the birds of the lagoon, it is possible to admire the rich fauna of the desert in the surroundings: reptiles, such as lizards and vipers, and mammals like foxes, mice or jerboas.
The abundant waters of rainy seasons also favor crops. The region is known for its production of early fruits such as watermelons or melons which are exported to the rest of the country as well as to Europe.
Spring and autumn are the best times to visit Merzouga because, in summer, the heat is suffocating and, in winter, the cold is very intense at night.
