Mount Mgoun Trek 6 days
National Park of
M’GOUN
Less popular with mountain hikers than the mythical Toubkal, it remains a privileged destination for hikers.
Relatively lower than its prestigious competitor, its absence of a glacier, despite its rocky ridge stretching over ten km, allows pleasant climbs that are accessible to a wider audience. In addition, thrill seekers can practice off-piste alpine skiing in addition to mountaineering.
The Mgoun offers many possibilities for excursions within a preserved area. The natural setting is impressive: the limestone rock slopes form amazing slopes where erosion has carved the peaks and beautiful gorges with orange garnet walls.
The Mgoun massif offers circuits for hikers of all levels, including families. They will make you climb steep slopes, cross rivers on the back of a mule, and bivouac at the water’s edge. The landscape is of astonishing diversity where fertile valleys follow one another and bare rock faces sheltering typical and welcoming villages.
Mount Mgoun Trek 6 days
The history of this region dates back millions of years: it constitutes a privileged geological sector, characterized by the presence of famous and spectacular footprints of sauropod and theropod dinosaurs, including the prehistoric site of Iroutane (Demnate region) and at various sites in the heart of the Ait Bouguemmez valley.
The region has seen the discovery of an almost complete skeleton of a sauropod called Atlasaurus imlajei, which is currently on display at the Museum of Earth Sciences in Rabat. The M’goun geopark is also full of fauna rich in endangered species, such as the Barbary sheep, the golden eagle, the bearded vulture and the Tamga panther.
In addition to the archaeological heritage, the site is rich in architectural and historical heritage of great value (kasbahs, ighermans, collective granaries and rock carvings).
